
The Swedish Intercountry Adoptions Authority (MIA) is a government authority under the Ministry of Health and
Social Affairs. MIA is also the Central Authority under the 1993 Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation
in respect of Intercountry Adoption. It is the task of MIA to establish a high quality in intercountry adoption operation in
Sweden. In particular MIA shall monitor that intercountry adoption intermediation in Sweden is conducted according to law and
the principle of the best interest of the child as expressed in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and in the 1993
Hague Convention.
MIA:

Decides matters of authorization of associations active in intermediation of intercountry adoptions.

Observes the international development in the field of intercountry adoption and gathers information.

Observes the development of costs for adoption of foreign children.

Negotiates with authorities and organizations in other countries.

Provides information and aid to authorities, organizations and the general public.

Considers, before the child leaves the country of origin, whether the procedure is acceptable in individual cases of adoption that involve related children or where there are otherwise special reasons for adopting without intermediation of an authorized association.

Examines foreign decisions on adoption for approval.
